While Russia’s invasion of Ukraine he continues, such a dramatic situation inevitably has consequences also from a technological point of view. Several telephone operators currently offer free or reduced-cost calls and SMS to the Ukrainian country, in order to ensure continuity in communications, which is essential in this time of crisis.
Now, following the request of the local official in charge of the digital sector, Elon Musk fto know on Twitter that he has activated his megaconstellation of Starlink satellites to guarantee Ukraine access to the internet in the event of cuts in telecommunications.
Starlink in Ukraine: the importance of Elon Musk’s satellites
Mykhailo FedorovDeputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of the Digital Sector, had in fact declared via Twitter addressing directly to Elon Musk:
“While trying to colonize Mars – Russia tries to occupy Ukraine. While your rockets successfully land from space – Russian rockets attack the Ukrainian population. We ask that you provide our country with Starlink stations and direct sane Russians to get up“.
The response of the South African-born entrepreneur was not long in coming:
“Starlink services are now active in Ukraine e more terminals are on the way“.
The goal, as we said at the beginning, is to provide the local population access to internet networks in the event of an interruption of telecommunication services. The country’s main internet service provider, following the Russian attack, was unable to guarantee continuous operation of the network for several days.
S.tarlink is a constellation of over 2,000 satellites designed to ensure broadband Internet access on a global scale with low latency. Just last February 25, a SpaceX Falcon rocket took off from California with a load of 50 new satellites, which will certainly be useful in this new mission aimed at giving the Ukrainian people a voice again.
