NASCAR plans to issue Daytona 500 non-fungible token (NFT) collectibles, and 500 ticket holders can get one NFT per wallet. The stock car racing company emailed 25,000 Daytona 500 ticket holders about the event ahead of the launch.
According to the announcement, ticket holders had 24 hours’ notice to sign up for a Wax blockchain wallet to enter the contest. “500 NFT winners were automatically entered into a draw to win one of five NASCAR drivers’ autographed helmets,” a rep told Bitcoin.com News.
The stock car racing company announced the official launch of digital collectibles on February 16. NASCAR explained that they chose Wax because they wanted to “ensure that as many people as possible could partake in the fun of this historic event.”
Additionally, NASCAR said the Wax blockchain network is “certified carbon neutral by ClimateCare and uses 220,000 times less energy than its competitors.” Prior to its partnership with NASCAR, Wax collaborated with Topps, Hasbro, Mattel and Funko. The Daytona 500 broadcast earned Fox around 4.83 million viewers last year, which is fewer than the 7.33 million viewers who watched the race in 2020.
“There is unprecedented excitement towards the 2022 Daytona 500 and we want to thank our fans for their continued dedication to the sport by giving ticket holders a free digital collector’s item to commemorate the Great American Race,” said Tim. Clark, NASCAR’s chief digital officer in a statement sent to Bitcoin.com News. The NASCAR executive added, “Fans want to interact with brands in new and unique ways and this is another step in that process. The move to give NASCAR Daytona ticket holders 500 NFTs follows the NFTs given to NFL Super Bowl ticket holders and Ticketmaster. The NFL has given fans virtual memorial tickets so attendees can commemorate Super Bowl LVI forever. “
William Quigley, CEO of Wax, noted that he believes that “the Wax blockchain is the only chain fast enough to keep up with NASCAR.” The partnership between Wax blockchain and NASCAR, follows the stock car racing company’s NFTs with Candy Digital. Last week Candy announced the launch of 23 NASCAR Cup Series vehicles called “Candy Racing Digi Casts” in partnership with the Race Team Alliance.
