Audi America announced that it has signed an agreement with Verizon to bring connectivity to the cars that will debut in 2024; the automaker aims to be one of the first to adopt the ultra-broadband telecommunications network in its vehicles.
“Audi owners in America will be among the first in the world to experience a new generation of cars and connectivity”Said Tami Erwin, CEO of Verizon Business. “We are proud to bring the world’s best 5G networking experience to a visionary partner like Audi, whose premium automotive engineering deserves second-to-none 5G technology to match.“.
The technology is important to a variety of connected services inside the car and allows occupants to download or stream content without compromise, receive software updates over the air and enhance the navigation system with HD / 3D maps. The adoption of 5G will also allow one better management of vehicle servicessuch as those based on the cloud or on the V2X technology (to actively interface with the infrastructure). 5G connectivity, in addition to providing real-time information on the condition of the chosen route, could also give a strong boost to the development of autonomous driving features.
Audi said it will begin introducing 5G connectivity on vehicles debuting during 2024, without delving further into the actual launch date. “Audi was the first automaker to bring in-vehicle Wi-Fi and 4G LTE connectivity, and we will be among the first to bring the next generation of connectivity to our customers in the United States.Said Filip Brabec, Senior VP, Product Planning, Audi of America. 2024 seems, however, to be a crucial year also for GM which recently entered into a deal with AT&T to offer a similar service always in America.
