According to the new analysis published byInternational Energy Agency (Iea), the global emissions deriving from the use of methane gas in the energy sector they would be the 70% higher compared to official estimates provided by various governments; this is an alarming figure, considering that methane is one of the main culprits of global warmingand contributes very strongly to the greenhouse effect.
Despite the agreements signed recently on the occasion of the climate conference held in Glasgowwhere 110 countries signed the Global methane pledgea promise in which they undertake a reduce by 30% methane emissions by 2030, emissions from methane gas continue to rise today. We have not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels, but we are approaching very quickly.
“The IEA has long been a proponent of stronger action to reduce methane emissions, but a key part of these efforts must lie in the transparency of data on the size and location of emissions, and it is for this reason that the results obtained from our research are so alarming. ” These are the words of Faith Birol, director of the International Energy Agency.
Is called “Global methane tracker”, The research to which Birol refers: using satellite surveys it is in fact possible to understand i points of origin of emissions, so as to understand who are the main culprits of pollution. During 2021, the areas of the world where the most polluted using methane was the Texasthe Turkmenistan (which alone is worth a third of the emissions) and the area of Middle East. Unfortunately some countries use methane without using the latest technologies, which results in a higher than normal level of pollution; the technological solutions to reduce emissions they exist, they work and can be replicated, and this is also one of the objectives that the IEA has set itself, that of facilitate the implementation of solutions techniques and policies to reduce emissions and slow global warming.
To date only the United Statesamong the states that burn the most methane, have signed the Global methane pledge, while the other countries that weigh more on the calculation, China, Russia, Iran and India abstained.
