Cuts for European futures as the ruble falls to record lows

*FINANCIAL MARKETS*

Euro STOXX 50 futures were down 142 points to 3,819.5, FTSE futures were down 99 points to 7,353.5, and German DAX futures were down 462 points to 14,078.0 by 0430 GMT.

Oil rose, while the ruble plunged almost 30%, to a new historical low, after Western countries imposed new sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, including the blockade of some banks of the international system of SWIFT payments.

Oil prices soared on escalating sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, which in turn prompted President Vladimir Putin to put his country’s nuclear deterrent on high alert.
