The Mobile World Congress of Barcelona, the main event dedicated to mobile technologies, opens its doors in these hours, but must face an international context as much as ever hard in addition to the ongoing pandemic.
The conflict currently in place between Russia and Ukraine led the organizer of the MWC, the GSM Associationto a strong stance with immediate implications on the roster of participants in the event in progress these days.
So we read in the short press release published on the home page of the official website of the MWC:
“The GSMA strongly condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The situation is rapidly evolving, and we learn that various governments are considering broader sanctions against Russia. In light of the emerging situation and considering the tragic loss of life, the MWC appears irrelevant in these circumstances. The MWC is a unification event that aims to bring the mobile ecosystem together to advance the ways and means by which connectivity can ensure the prosperity of people, industry and society.
The GSMA abides by all government sanctions and policies resulting from this situation. There will be no Russian pavilion at MWC22. Security for the event is constantly reviewed and adjusted based on the information that emerges“.
The position taken by the organizers of the Mobile World Congress therefore adapts to the decisions taken by the majority of government bodies on the line of sanctions on Russia and proximity to cause of the Ukrainian people during these days of war in Europe.
The GSM Association’s choice of to exclude with immediate effect the Russia and its products from participation in the Mobile World Congress closely follow the statements of the US president Joe Bidenintent on denying Russia access to technology and industries, including the import of US products.
