With the climate emergency increasingly at the center of the global political – and economic – debate, the technology sector has for some time been aiming at the realization of eco-sustainable solutions that are both profitable on the market and less impacting on the environment. The recent Cop-26 in Glasgow made us clearly understand that this is not enough to reverse the course (are we in time?), But it is, in any case, a matter of signals capable of introducing a modus operandi which, hopefully, will become more and more widespread.
And so it must be taken as good news that Samsung received the Carbon Trust certification * for CO2 reduction (“Reducing CO2“) relatively to five of its storage media:
- HBM2E (8GB)
- GDDR6 (8Gb)
- UFS 3.1 (512GB)
- Portable T7 SSD (1TB)
- microSD EVO Select (128GB)
Not only that: the carbon footprint was
- measured for 20 other products belonging to the memory sector (“CO2 Measured“, or measured as a benchmark to be able to see a possible reduction over the years and generations of products to follow, unlike the 5 products above which have been labeled as” Reducing CO2 “): SODIMM (8GB / 16GB), LPDDR5 ( 8GB / 12GB / 16GB), RDIMM (16GB / 32GB), 980 PRO SSD (250GB / 500GB / 1TB / 2TB), HBM2E (16GB), GDDR6 (16Gb), UFS 3.1 (128GB / 256GB), microSD EVO Select (64GB / 256GB / 512GB), Portable T7 SSD (500GB / 2TB)
- verified according to ISO 14064-3 certification by UL ** for 4 families of LED products for the automotive sector (C-Series 3W: 3W White gen3, 3W Amber gen3, 3W White gen2, 3W Amber gen2)

The UL mark certifies a product by ascertaining its suitability for certain standards, including environmental and energy efficiency standards.
The label “Reducing CO2” means that for the production of the 5 memories reported at the beginning of the article carbon emissions have been reduced compared to the previous generation. Translated: less energy and raw materials were used per unit of measurement (chip). For example, for the realization of the portable 1TB T7 SSD memory, Samsung used eco-sustainable paper in the packaging instead of plastic.
- carbon emission savings for the 5 products from the moment of their availability on the market (July 2021): 680,000 tons of CO2, equal to the impact generated in one year by 149,000 cars on the road.
The verification of compliance with ISO 14064-3 by the international organization UL highlights the energy efficiency of Samsung’s C-series 3W LED product families, capable of consuming less while ensuring the emission of more light. This translates into lower carbon emissions and a greater range of electric vehicles per single charge.
