European car market, the Kia e-Niro the most sold electric in January 2022

January 2022 it was not a good month for the European auto market. Data collected by JATO Dynamics across 26 European markets shows that the European automotive market performed its worst performance since 1991 last month, with a total of 811,332 new cars registered.

This is a decline of 2.4% compared to January 2021 and 20.8% compared to the same month of 2020. A complex first month of 2022 for the automotive sector in which, however, they are electric cars and plug-in hybrids do well. According to data from JATO Dynamics, registrations of BEV and PHEV vehicles totaled 149,400 units in the month, up 36% compared to January 2021 and 105% compared to January 2020. However, the growth of electric and plug -in was not enough to offset the 27% drop in diesel registrations and the 1% drop in registrations of petrol models.

In addition, 100% electric cars grew by 73% compared to January 2021, representing 54% of the plug-in car segment.

TOP 10 OF ELECTRIC AND PHEV

Coming to the sales ranking of January 2022, among the electric in first place we find the Kia e-Niro with 4,049 registrations. Second place for the Renault Zoe with 3,338 registrations. Third step of the podium for the electric 500 with 3,276 registrations. The fourth place of the Hyundai Kona Electric and the sixth of the Dacia Spring should also be highlighted.

The Tesla Model 3 does not appear in the top 10 of the BEVs. A figure that is not too surprising given that we know that the deliveries of the electric cars of the company of Elon Musk are discontinuous. Coming to the PHEV models, in first position we find the Peugeot 3008, in the second the Volvo XC40 and in the third the BMW 3 Series.

And looking at the overall ranking of January 2022, the best-selling car in Europe was the Dacia Sandero with 17,558 registrations. Second place for the Peugeot 208 and third for the Peugeot 2008. Only fourth for the Volkswagen Golf.

It should also be noted that 402,900 SUVs were registered last month, representing 49.7% of the market, the highest monthly market share ever recorded for these vehicles. This is yet another sign of how this segment is increasing its importance more and more.
